Parathyroid Surgery

Dr. Owen presented his series of nearly 400 parathyroid operations at the 2009 American Head and Neck Society annual meeting.  He showed that measuring intraoperative PTH levels seven minutes after lesion excision allowed early determination of cure 80% of the time.  99% of patients were cured of their disease.

Thyroid Surgery
Dr. Owen is the principal investigator for a prospective trial investigating whether intraoperative video laryngoscopy improves recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring during thyroid surgery.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) of Head and Neck Cancer (HNC)

Dr. Owen carried out the first series of RFA on advanced HNC for patients with no other good treatment options.  There were some excellent results such as relief of pain and shrinkage or destruction of tumor.  There were also some complications which was expected given that this treatment is novel.  Further study is needed to refine the techniques to make it an appropriate option for patients with advanced disease.
